En el sistema circulatorio el NO es muy importante, ya que está demostrado que los pacientes con hipertensión arterial esencial tienen disminución del NO sanguíneo, además previene la formación de placa de ateroma. De hecho los estudios muy recientes de los medicamentos usados en el tratamiento del colesterol y triglicéridos producen un aumento en el óxido nítrico sanguíneo.

Dónde obtenerlo

El óxido nítrico es una molécula muy pequeña. Para producirla hace falta que exista una base, la arginina, presente en cualquier alimento que contenga proteínas y un proceso enzimático. Las principales fuentes naturales de arginina son la carne, el pescado, la soja y las nueces. De la misma manera, las frutas y verduras, que tienen propiedades o agentes antioxidantes (vitaminas A, C, o E, y ponifenoles), protegen frente al estrés oxidativo. Sin embargo, una dieta rica en grasas estimula la formación de radicales libres y disminuye el óxido nítrico.


Cabe mencionar que la arginina de los alimentos se transforma en óxido nítrico por la actuación de tres enzimas. Pocas personas saben que el ejercicio físico desencadena una serie de reacciones en el organismo que lo convierten en la manera más importante de estimular la formación del óxido nítrico.

Consejos prácticos

Realizar entrenamiento aeróbico 30-35 minutos, 3-5 veces por semana.
Suplementación con productos que liberen mayor cantidad de óxido nítrico sanguíneo, se realice o no entrenamiento con pesas.
Aumentar el consumo de agua mientras se usen más precursores del NO.
Vitamina C y E a dosis altas para eliminar radicales libres.
En caso de hipercolesterinemia, se pueden utilizar medicamentos (estatinas) que liberen mayor cantidad de NO sanguíneo, pues el NO mejora la circulación ayudando a los vasos sanguíneos a mandar un mensaje al músculo circundante para que se relaje, lo cual ensancha las arterias, incrementa el flujo sanguíneo y ayuda a mantener una presión saludable.
El NO mantiene su sistema joven, tonificado y flexible. De hecho, optimizar la producción de NO es como hacer ejercicios diarios; el NO también propicia la salud del sistema inmune y actúa como neurotransmisor.
