Nos da conciencia de nuestro cuerpo en el espacio, es decir, nos informa sobre la posición de los músculos, y la posición relativa de partes corporales contiguas. Regula la dirección, rango de movimiento, permite reacciones y respuestas automáticas, sustentando la acción motora planificada. Actúa en el control del equilibrio y la coordinación de ambos lados del cuerpo.

En conjunto con el sistema propioceptivo, el sistema vestibular mantiene el tono muscular, coordina automáticamente el movimiento de los ojos, cabeza y cuerpo, manteniendo un campo visual estable y es fundamental en la percepción del espacio y en la orientación del cuerpo en relación a éste.
